The Value of a Sociological Perspective on Palliative Care
Dr Diana Teggi and Prof Kate Woodthorpe · March 2026
Palliative care is often shaped by clinical assumptions, but dying is equally a social, emotional, relational, environmental, and economic experience. A sociological perspective broadens understanding beyond physical symptoms to include: • Social relationships and family structures • Cultural expectations and norms • Inequalities, deprivation, and lived environments • Institutional processes and power dynamics • Concepts such as identity, meaning, and personhood
