Pediatric nurses' perceptions of obstacles and supportive behavior's in end-of-life care: A systematic literature review

Introduction: Pediatric end-of-life care is a complex and emotionally challenging aspect of healthcare that requires specialized knowledge, skills, and support. Pediatric nurses are often at the forefront of providing care to terminally ill children and their families. This systematic literature review aims to examine pediatric nurses' perceptions of obstacles and supportive behaviors in end-of-life care. Method(s): A systematic search was conducted across electronic databases, including PubMed, CINAHL, and PsycINFO, using search terms related to pediatric nurses, end-of-life care, obstacles, and supportive behaviors. Studies were included if they focused on pediatric nurses' perceptions of obstacles and supportive behaviors in end-of-life care, regardless of study design or setting. Result(s): Ten relevant studies were identified and included in the review, offering insights from various healthcare settings worldwide. Key themes emerged from the synthesis of findings, including the obstacles faced by pediatric nurses in end-of-life care, such as emotional distress, ethical dilemmas, communication challenges, and resource limitations. Despite these challenges, pediatric nurses demonstrated a range of supportive behaviors aimed at enhancing end-of-life care, including providing emotional support to families, advocating for patients' comfort and dignity, facilitating communication among healthcare team members, and engaging in self-care practices. Conclusion(s): Pediatric nurses play a critical role in providing endof- life care to pediatric patients and their families. Understanding their perceptions of obstacles and supportive behaviors is essential for improving the quality of care and enhancing nurses' wellbeing. Future research should focus on developing and implementing interventions to address identified obstacles and promote supportive behaviors among pediatric nurses.
