Addressing Racism in Pediatric Serious Illness: Insights for Clinical Care and Advocacy

Inequitable care across racial groups has been a reality throughout the history of modern medicine. These inequities extend to children living with serious illness and impact their experiences within the healthcare system as well as their health outcomes. While important in all of pediatrics, when caring for children with serious illness the importance of cultural humility, building trust, accountability, and advocacy are critical for the best possible outcomes. Palliative care specialists are expert in communication and nonjudgement. This expertise can be harnessed and utilized to mitigate unconscious bias, improve communication, and amplify the voices of the patients and families we serve across the illness spectrum.
