A Case Report in Pediatric Palliative Care: Beliefs of Rebirth

In Buddhism, preserving life at all costs is generally discouraged, and to prolong life without hope for cure or recovery stems from the sins of delusion and worldly attachment. When an infant's death is imminent, Buddhist parents often prioritize the child's spiritual state over prolonging life, as this supports a favorable rebirth. Additionally, the belief that a disability preventing one's understanding of Buddhist teachings can hinder a child's potential for Nirvana influenced a family's request for comfort care for their newborn with intraventricular hemorrhage. This presented an ethical dilemma for the medical team.
