Neuropathic pain in palliative care patients

Each year, an estimated 40 million people are need of palliative care(PC). 78% of whom live in low- and middle-income countries. For children, 98% of those needing palliative care in-low and-middle income countries (1). Although, number of the patients who are in need of palliative care is so high, only about 14% of them can currently receive it. Neuropatic Pain(NP) is one of the most frequent and serious symptoms experienced by patients in need of Palliative Care. There are many ethiologic factors for neuropathic pain such as; cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, AIDS, diabetis, neurologic diseases, rheumatologic diseases (1). Although neuropathic pain is such as a big problem, neuropathic pain remains difficult to treat, challenging providers across multiple disciplines and wrong diagnosis. Because insufficient awareness of neuropathic pain by health care professionals, resulting in late diagnosis, inadequate pain management and reduced unnecessary hospitalizations and use of health-care services (2). Thus; we wanted to draw attention to this subject, the causes of neuropathic pain, diagnosis, management strategies, some studies, clinical findings about neuropathic pain in palliative care patients.
