Project "Bridge Poland-Colombia": Cooperation for pediatric palliative care, building the first children's hospice in Colombia

Introduction: International cooperation plays a key role in solving health problems that require the involvement of specialists and institutions from various parts of the world, as exemplified by the connection between Poland and Colombia. The long history of the hospice movement in Poland has contributed to the development of standards of care in pediatric palliative care. By understanding the distinct characteristics and barriers in South American countries, as well as institutional support, it is possible to adapt Polish standards to the healthcare system in Colombia, enabling the establishment of a sustainable foundation for a new care system that meets the needs of the youngest patients and their families requiring palliative care support. Project description: The project aims to support the development of pediatric palliative care in Colombia, including building the first inpatient and home hospice for children as well as a perinatal hospice. The project is carried out thanks to the collaboration between the medical community of pediatricians involved in palliative care in Poland and Colombia, along with support from the Pallottine Fathers - the Society of the Catholic Apostolate. Polish experience and care standards will serve as a model, adapted to the conditions and needs in Colombia. Expected outcomes: The effect of the collaboration will be assessed based on the number of patients qualified and admitted to the inpatient and home children's hospice as well as the perinatal hospice. Implementation of a training program preparing a multidisciplinary palliative care team is planned. Increasing public awareness and education about pediatric palliative care will also be evaluated as a measure of the project's impact on improving the accessibility of palliative care for pediatric patients and their families. The project's implementation will indicate to what extent international cooperation can improve access to healthcare and inspire actions toward global children's health.
